Montrose Port: first Scottish port to provide shore power to energy sector

Montrose Port Authority is proud to introduce our cutting-edge shore power service Plug Montrose – revolutionising how vessels operate in port.

As the first port in Scotland to offer shore power to offshore energy supply vessels, we are leading the way for the Scottish ports sector in reducing emissions and promoting sustainable maritime practices.

What is shore power?

Shore power is an alternative energy source that provides vessels with the option to shut down their engines and connect to the electricity grid while berthed in port.

This eliminates the need for ships to run their engines to power onboard systems during port stays and reduces harmful emissions, noise pollution and fuel consumption, contributing to a healthier environment for those onboard and our community.

Key features of our shore power service:
  • Available on Berths 1 and 2
  • Each supply pit has a maximum capacity of 800 kVA, offering both 400V, 440V and 690V at 50 or 60 Hz
  • Easy and convenient connection process
  • Comprehensive support from our experienced team

Plug Montrose Ltd is a self-funded 50/50 £1 million joint venture between Montrose Port Authority and Plug Shore Power Ltd.

Plug Shore Power Ltd is the UK-based branch of Plug AS which has partnered with several Norwegian ports to build shore power since its first project in Bergen in 2018.

Plug is owned by Western Norway’s largest renewable company Eviny, and Montrose is the first port in the UK that the leading shore power company has chosen to partner with.
Our shore power service is part of our commitment to sustainability.

By providing this innovative solution, we're not only helping vessel operators minimise their carbon footprint but we are also reducing our scope 3 emissions in our aim to become Scotland’s first carbon-neutral port.

We’re proud to be supporting Montrose Port’s net zero ambitions, ambitions which have seen us work hard over the past six months to install new underground cables and build a new High Voltage substation, both of which have the capacity to handle the increased loads and demands that will accompany Montrose Port’s drive to decarbonise their operations.
