Case study

Rix Renewables

Rix Renewables is a comprehensive service provider to the onshore and offshore wind industry, delivering services including skilled labour provision,  statutory inspections, crew transfer vessels, and wind turbine gearbox oil exchanges.

The Rix Group has operated out of Montrose for more than 60 years and as such is one of Montrose Port Authority’s (MPA) longest-standing clients, so it was a given that when Rix Renewables started in 2018 they quickly established a footprint of their own in the port.

We spoke to Rix Renewables Business Development Manager, Jonty Cherryman, about the advantages of operating from Montrose and the significant opportunities being created by the continued growth of Scotland’s offshore wind industry.

A Strategic Base to Support Offshore Wind in Scotland

Montrose is strategically positioned for Rix Renewables thanks to the port’s established role in Scotland’s rapidly growing offshore wind industry.

Montrose Port is home to the operations and maintenance (O&M) base for Seagreen, Scotland’s largest operational offshore wind farm. Construction is also underway on the O&M base for the Inch Cape offshore wind farm, which is due to become operational in 2027.

Located on Scotland’s east coast, Montrose gives Rix Renewables direct access to the country’s expanding offshore wind market and provides an ideal base from which to grow its Scottish client base.

The company has already supported the construction of the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm from Montrose. With an established presence in Grimsby and a strong reputation within the renewables industry, Rix Renewables sees Montrose as an opportunity to replicate its successes elsewhere in the UK while responding to the evolving requirements of clients in Scotland.

For Rix Renewables, however, location is only part of the equation. The company also requires facilities capable of meeting the day-to-day operational demands of the offshore wind industry.

Jonty highlights Montrose Port’s ample quayside space for offshore wind vessels, extensive loading areas and well-maintained quayside facilities as important advantages for the business.

A Collaborative Partnership

The relationship with Montrose Port Authority is another important part of Rix Renewables’ experience at the port.

Jonty describes the MPA team as friendly, approachable, and easy to work with, with staff always willing to make time for a meeting. Whether Rix Renewables needs practical assistance at the port or help finding the right specialist or contact, the MPA team is on hand to provide support.

The wider community of businesses based at the port also creates valuable opportunities for collaboration and networking. MPA actively facilitates introductions between tenants, helping businesses such as Rix Renewables develop new relationships within the local supply chain.

Jonty says there is already a diverse range of businesses operating in the area and expects this ecosystem to continue expanding alongside the growth of Scotland’s offshore wind industry.

With Scotland’s offshore wind pipeline continuing to develop, Rix Renewables and Montrose Port Authority are well positioned to build on their successful partnership – supporting new projects, strengthening the local supply chain and contributing to the long-term growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector.

Stories from the port and the local area
At the heart of Montrose, success at the Port has a knock on effect for the town and surrounding areas and the benefits are also felt the other way round too.
