Customs House Restoration Project

Welcome to the Montrose Port’s dedicated page for the Customs House Restoration Project, a transformative effort to restore and revitalise the historic Customs House and Granary Store on Meridian Street into a commercially viable space for the renewables sector supply chain, a renewables skills academy and a vibrant community hub.

About the Customs House and Granary Store

Customs House, a prominent landmark on Montrose Port’s North Quay boundary, dates back to the 19th century and has played a vital role in the port’s maritime history. Originally serving as the main customs office for goods entering and leaving Montrose, this building is not only a piece of local heritage but a symbol of the area's commercial and cultural legacy.

The adjacent Granary Store, equally rich in history, supported the Customs House by providing essential storage space for traded goods, cementing Montrose's role as a vibrant trading hub.

In 2023, Montrose Port Authority purchased these properties with the vision of safeguarding their historical value and unlocking their potential as community and commercial assets. This ambitious restoration project aims to transform these buildings into modern commercial offices, a training complex and community café.

Developing the skills of the next Generation

The regenerated Customs House will feature a new skills academy which will offer courses on working in renewables - bridging the gap between teaching and practice, and supporting the jobs and opportunities offered by the growth of the offshore wind industry in Scotland.

In November 2024 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding alongside Dundee & Angus College and Angus Council, entering into an agreement to work together to develop this skills academy. The first entry-level course, supported by Vestas, will begin in January 2026.

Stories from the port and the local area
At the heart of Montrose, success at the Port has a knock on effect for the town and surrounding areas and the benefits are also felt the other way round too.
