Montrose Port Strengthens Green Credentials with Key ISO 14064 Certification

Montrose Port Authority (MPA) has taken another significant step toward its goal of becoming Scotland’s leading green energy hub with Dr. Turgay Koroglu, the port’s Decarbonisation Engineer, achieving ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Lead Verifier accreditation.

This certification reinforces MPA’s commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction in the maritime and ports sector, further solidifying its position as an industry leader in environmental responsibility.

What is the ISO 14064 GHG Lead Verifier Accreditation?

ISO 14064 is an internationally recognised standard that provides organisations with a structured framework for quantifying, monitoring, reporting and verifying greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving Lead Verifier status demonstrates expert-level proficiency in assessing and validating GHG inventories, ensuring Montrose Port’s emissions reporting meets the highest standards of accuracy and transparency.

How this Impacts Montrose Port

This achievement brings immediate and long-term benefits to MPA’s operations and sustainability initiatives:

  • Enhanced Emissions Monitoring: With in-house expertise, MPA can implement more rigorous emissions monitoring and reporting processes while ensuring strict compliance with international standards.
  • Strengthened Decarbonisation Initiatives: This accreditation complements MPA’s existing green initiatives, including the innovative Plug Montrose shore power facility. This cutting-edge installation enables berthed vessels to switch off their engines, significantly reducing port-side emissions.
  • Industry Leadership: By investing in advanced qualifications and sustainable and sustainable technologies, Montrose Port reinforces its position as a leader in environmental responsibility within the maritime sector.

Vision for the Future

“This certification is more than professional development; it’s a strategic asset that will drive forward the port’s sustainability efforts,” says Dr. Koroglu. “It enables us to assure our stakeholders that our GHG reporting is conducted with the highest level of integrity and accuracy while supporting our mission to decarbonise and become a leading green energy hub.”

This achievement reflects Montrose Port’s long-term strategy to support national and global net-zero targets through practical action. By enhancing our internal capabilities in greener initiatives and emissions verification, MPA is encouraging innovation and driving progress toward a cleaner maritime industry while investing in our people and their development.

Dr. Koroglu added: “This accreditation not only enhances my professional capabilities but it also aligns with my personal values of sustainability and environmental responsibility. It is a testament to my dedication to this cause and to continuous professional growth.”

Montrose Port Authority remains steadfast in its mission to set new standards in sustainability, accelerating the transition to a greener maritime industry while strengthening Scotland’s position as a leader in renewable energy and carbon reduction.
