Montrose Port Authority Welcomes First Futures in Offshore Wind Students for Visit

Montrose Port Authority (MPA) and Vestas recently hosted students from Dundee and Angus College’s first Futures in Offshore Wind cohort at Montrose Port. The students were given a tour of our facilities to complement their learning by gaining valuable, real-world insight into the offshore wind sector.
The students are the first to participate in the Futures in Offshore Wind course, which commenced in January. The course builds practical hands-on skills in the renewables sector, delivering practical experience for those looking to work in Scotland’s growing offshore wind industry. The course is accredited by Vestas, turbine manufacturer for Seagreen and Inch Cape, and global leader in sustainable energy, strengthening links to industry and solidifying the course’s relevance.

The visiting students were given a presentation, followed by a tour of Montrose Port’s facilities, and then had the opportunity to tour the ESVAGT Brint, Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm’s purpose-built Service Operation Vessel (SOV), to gain experience of what life is like offshore for the wind technicians. The ESVAGT Brint takes offshore wind technicians to the wind farm for two weeks at a time, calling at Montrose Port in between.

The Futures in Offshore Wind course will be held at the Skills Academy within Montrose’s Customs House once restoration of the historic landmark is complete. The building, along with the adjacent Granary Store, was purchased by MPA in 2023 and is currently undergoing redevelopment in partnership with local contractors, including Pert Bruce Construction, Adam & Gordon Architects, Hardies and Ramsey & Chalmers. The project will transform the building into a modern facility that, alongside the Skills Academy, will host offices and commercial space.

MPA is working closely with Dundee & Angus College and Angus Council to develop the Skills Academy, which is funded in part by £1.25 million from the Scottish Government’s Tay Cities Industrial Reinvestment Programme. The Skills Academy connects academia with industry and is designed to help local people access the opportunities that will open through offshore wind farms while bolstering clean growth across the Tay Cities region.
Committed to powering Scotland’s offshore wind industry, Montrose Port is one of the major Operations and Maintenance (O&M) hubs for offshore wind in the world. Montrose currently acts as the O&M base for Seagreen, the largest and deepest fully operational offshore wind farm in Scotland. Construction for the O&M base for the Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm is currently underway, and once operational, this wind farm will encompass up to 72 15MW wind turbines, generating enough green energy to power more than 1.7 million homes.
