Celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024
Today, on World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we’re reflecting on the importance of ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all workers. This year’s theme, ‘The impacts of climate change on occupational safety and health,’ highlights the need for continued efforts to improve safety and health standards worldwide.
Did you know that around 2.78 million workers die yearly due to work-related accidents or diseases? Additionally, 374 million workers suffer from non-fatal work-related injuries or illnesses. These statistics from the International Labour Organization highlight the critical importance of prioritising safety and health in the workplace.
At Montrose Port Authority, we have implemented various processes and procedures to ensure the continued safety of our employees, tenants, and other port users. Some of these include:
- Risk Assessments: Conducting regular and thorough risk assessments helps us identify and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace.
- Employee Participation: We actively encourage employees, tenants and port users to participate in safety reporting as well as providing feedback on safety initiatives, creating a culture of safety awareness within Montrose Port.
- Safety Training: Comprehensive safety training ensures that employees are equipped to identify hazards and prevent workplace injuries.
- Emergency Planning: We have a robust Emergency Response and Preparedness Plan in place for our trust port, which is regularly tested and updated to address the impact of climate change. We are also part of the Tayside Local Resilience Partnership where we work closely with neighbouring councils and the emergency services, the NHS, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency to prepare plans and develop emergency response procedures.
- Equipment Maintenance: Regular maintenance of equipment and machinery helps prevent malfunctions and reduce the risk of workplace accidents.
- Effective Communication: We prioritise effective communication to ensure that all stakeholders are informed about safety policies, procedures, and potential hazards.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): We provide mandatory and task-specific PPE to protect our employees from workplace hazards such as hard hats, Hi-Vis, safety glasses, life vests, safety harnesses and more.
- New and Refurbished Buildings: Future-proofing new and existing buildings against the impact of climate change is a key consideration in our planning process, such as our refurbishment of Customs House.
- Shore Power: Our latest project involves installing the first UK shore-to-ship power supply, allowing vessels to switch off their engines while in port, reducing fuel consumption, noise pollution and our scope 3 emissions.
